Book Review: The Shifters of 2040

An author by the name of Ami Blackwelder asked for a review of her novel "The Shifters of 2040", a sci-fi story set 30 or so years in the future, in which the earth has been visited by an alien race who attempt to assimilate into our society. As shapeshifters, they are able to disguise themselves as humans and animals... not an original storyline, however, the interaction between the two races is depicted in an interesting an engaging fashion.

A caveat here: I am indeed a fan of sci-fi, however not of romance and prose, which Ms. Blackwelder uses copiously throughout the novel - so, I had to skim some of the "flowery" descriptions to get to the meat of the story. The plot evolution was well thought out, as well as the character development... but I did find the pace a bit slow. But then, I'm a guy with ADD who likes Dan Brown, John Grisham, and David Baldachi, so I can't fault the author here; just to say that I do think the book would suit the under-30 female demographic more so than the  over-50 crusty-old-fart segment of society. That said, the author did a knock-up job and I wish her all the best.

Something more to add: as a self-published work, I couldn't find a single thing to pick at.  "What!" you may exclaim - "Wolfy isn't berating yet another POD (print on demand) effort?"  Yup, you heard it here... this girl did her homework, had it edited by someone other than herself, formatted the content artistically, and has done what seems to be an admirable job at self-promotion.

Ami, I'm glad to have been introduced to you. Now please write a book for beer-swilling, Bruce Willis Die Hard fans that is the antithesis of chick-lit. Double dare ya!    ;-)

4 out of 5 stars.
